Procedure

A solution of sodium nitrite (1.76 g, 25.5 mmol) in 10 mL water was added dropwise to a solution of 4-(2-pyridin-4-yl-vinyl)-phenylamine (2.0 g, 10.2 mmol) in 102 mL 4M HCl at 2-3° C. After stirring the mixture at this temperature for 1 hr, a solution of sodium azide (1.32 g, 20.4 mmol) in 10 mL water was slowly added dropwise, maintaining the temperature at 2-3° C. Stirring was continued for 30 min at this temperature and then the ice bath was allowed to come to ambient temperature while stirring continued overnight. Saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate was added carefully to this mixture with stirring until the evolution of gas subsided. The precipitate was filtered off and dried overnight in the funnel to yield 1.875 g of the product as a beige powder (83% yield). mp 88.2-89.4° C. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.51 (dd, J=1.4, 6.1 Hz, 2H), 7.46 (ddd, J=1.9, 2.7, 8.5 Hz, 2H), 7.29 (dd, J=1.4, 6.1 Hz, 2H), 7.18 (d, J=16.4 Hz, 1H), 6.98 (ddd, J=2.0, 2.7, 8.5 Hz, 2H), 6.90 (d, J=16.4 Hz, 1H). 13C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl3) δ 150.3, 144.4, 140.3, 133.1, 132.0, 128.4, 125.7, 120.8, 119.5. λmaxCH3CN 323 nm (ε3.92×104). IR νmax(cm−1) 2122 (N3).
