Procedure

(S)-tert-butyl 2-methyl-4-(4-phenylphthalazin-1-yl)piperazine-1-carboxylate (2.05 g, 5.07 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (75 mL). Trifluoroacetic acid (15 mL) was added and the reaction stirred at rt for 1.5 hours. The reaction was added to saturated NaHCO3 (150 mL) and neutralized by the portion wise addition of solid NaHCO3. The layers were separated and the aqueous phase was extracted twice with dichloromethane. The combined organics were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give a pale yellow foam. MS (M+H)+=305.2.
