Compound 5 (31 g) was stirred 4 h with a mixture of dioxane (250 mL) and 1 M HCl (250 mL) till the starting material disappeared (approx. 3 h). Ethyl acetate (500 mL) was added, and the aqueous phase after extraction washed twice more with ethyl acetate (250 mL each). The combined extracts were washed with saturated NaHCO3 solution (2×300 mL) dried with MgSO4 and evaporated in vacuo to give the chromatographically pure material 6 which was directly used for further steps.
