A solution of ethyl (3-hydrazinophenyl)acetate (15 g, 65 mmol) and 4,4-dimethyl-3-oxopentanenitrile (12.5 g, 0.1 mol) in EtOH (100 mL) containing conc. HCl (25 mL) was heated at reflux overnight. After removal of the solvent, the residue was washed with Et2O to afford ethyl 2-(3-(5-amino-3-t-butyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl)acetate (18 g). MS (ESI) m/z: 302 (M+H+).
