Procedure
To a solution of 4-(methylamino)-2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde (10.0 g, 55 mmol) and (3-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile (10.5 g, 65 mmol) in DMF (150 mL) was added K2CO3 (38 g, 275 mmol) at RT. The mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 18 h. After cooling, the reaction was diluted with DMF (50 mL) and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to give crude 8-methyl-2-(methylsulfanyl)-6-(3-nitrophenyl)-8H-pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-7-ylideneamine (9.0 g, 50% yield) which was used in the next reaction without further purification.
