Procedure

To a solution of 3-nitro-benzaldehyde (15.1 g, 0.1 mol) in CH2Cl2 (200 mL) was added dropwise (triphenyl-phosphanylidene)acetic acid ethyl ester (34.8 g, 0.1 mol) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) at 0° C. After the addition was complete, the resulting mixture was stirred for 1 h. After removal the solvent under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by column chromatography to afford 3-(3-nitrophenyl)acrylic acid ethyl ester (16.5 g, 74.6% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 8.42 (s, 1H), 8.23 (dd, J=0.8, and 8.0 Hz, 1H), 7.82 (d, J=7.6 Hz, 1H), 7.72 (d, J=16.0 Hz, 1H), 7.58 (t, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.56 (d, J=16.0 Hz, 1H), 4.29 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.36 (t, J=6.8 Hz, 3H).
