Procedure
To a solution of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde (15.1 g, 0.1 mol) in CH2Cl2 (200 mL) was added dropwise (triphenylphosphanylidene)acetic acid ethyl ester (34.8 g, 0.1 mol) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) at 0° C. After the addition was completed, the resulting mixture was stirred for 2 h. After removal the solvent under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by column chromatography to afford 3-(4-nitrophenyl)acrylic acid ethyl ester (16.5 g, 74.6% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 8.25 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.71 (d, J=16.0 Hz, 1H), 7.67 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.55 (d, J=16.0 Hz, 2H), 4.29 (q, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.34 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
