Benzhydryl 2-(3-phenoxyacetamido-2-oxoazetidin-1-yl)-3-methyl-4-methoxy-2-butenoate (200 mg) was dissolved in 1 ml of 1:1 mixture of anisole and trifluoracetic acid at 0°. After 30 min. at 0°, 50 ml of hexane was added and the solvents were removed under reduced pressure. The residue thereby obtained was washed thoroughly with ether and dried. A total of 53 mg of the title product was isolated: nmr (CDCl3) δ 2.07 (s, 3, CH3), 3.33 (s, 3, --OCH3), 4.33 (s, 2, --CH2OCH3), 3.77 (m, 2, C4 --H), 5.00 (m, 1, C3 --H), 4.52 (s, 2, side chain CH2) and 7.2 (b, ArH).
