Procedure

1.58 g of the 5-[4-{(E)-3-phenylallyl}-piperazin-1-yl]-10,11-dihydro-5H-benzo[4,5]cyclohepta-[1,2-b]pyridine was dissolved in 24 ml of isopropyl alcohol. To the solution was dropwise added 8 ml of a 2N dioxane solution of hydrogen chloride at room temperature. After the completion of the addition, the resulting mixture was stirred for 1 hour at the same temperature. The resulting crystals were collected by filtration to obtain 1.90 g of 5-[4-{(E)-3-phenylallyl}piperazin-1-yl]-10,11-dihydro-5H-benzo-[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]pyridine trihydrochloride having a melting point of 174°-176° C.
