A solution of 0.9 g of diethyl azodicarboxylate in 5 ml of tetrahydrofuran was added dropwise to a solution of 0.9 g of (S)-3-hydroxy-1-[4-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-2-butynyl]-2-pyrrolidinone, 1.1 g of triphenylphosphine and 0.9 g of 4-nitrobenzoic acid in 30 ml of dry tetrahydrofuran. The mixture was stirred overnight and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was purified by chromatography (silica gel), giving 1.2 g of the desired product as off white crystals, [α]D26° =+41° (dichloromethane); mp 89°-90° C.
