Procedure

A solution of [3-(4-methyl-piperazin-1-yl)propylamino]acetic acid ethyl ester (1.80 g, 7.41 mmol) and triethylamine (2.3 mL, 16.4 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was treated with 5-bromo-3-bromomethyl-pyridin-2-ylamine hydrobromide (2.57 g, 7.41 mmol). After stirring at room temperature for 3 d, the mixture was diluted with H2O (100 mL) and then extracted with EtOAc (4×100 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4, filtered and the solvent was removed in vacuo. Purification by flash column chromatography (silica gel, CH2Cl2/MeOH, 97:3 to 90:10) gave the title compound (0.50 g, 16%) as a colorless oil: MS (ESI) m/e 428 (M+H)+.
