To a mixture of 2-methyl dioxolane (0.897 ml, 10 mmol) and azidotrimethylsilane (1.6 ml, 12 mmol) was added SnCl4 (40 μl) at −78° C. After addition, the cooling bath was removed and the reaction was warmed up to room temperature. After 1 hr, the reaction was worked up by partitioning between DCM (50 ml) and saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (50 ml). The aqueous layer was further extracted with DCM (20 ml). All the DCM extracts were combined, dried over MgSO4 and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in 10% aqueous methanol. After 2 hr at room temperature, all the solvents were removed under reduced pressure. The title compound was obtained as a colourless oil (224 mg, 17.1%).
