To a mixture of (2E)-3-{4-[cycloheptylidene(4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl]phenyl}-2-propenoic acid (11) (0.3 g, 0.861 mmol) and dry CH2Cl2 (5 mL) was added oxalyl chloride (0.15 mL, 1.72 mmol) slowly, followed by DMF (2 drops). The reaction mixture became a clear solution immediately after the addition of DMF. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h under nitrogen. The reaction mixture was concentrated to give 39 as an oily residue that was used without further purification. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 1.53 (s, 8H), 2.21-2.25 (m, 4H), 6.48 (d, J=16 Hz, 1H), 7.19 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 2H), 7.33 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.45 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 2H), 7.54 (d, J=16 Hz, 1H), 7.62 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 2H), 9.35 (s, 1H).
