Triethylamine (123.2 mL, 876 mmol) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride (156.6 g, 822 mmol) and isosorbide (43) (40 g, 274 mmol) in dichloromethane (600 mL) over 15 minutes. The mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 16 hours then at 50° C. for 4 hours before diluting with dichloromethane (1 L). The organic layer was washed with water (2×1 L), then dried (Na2SO4), filtered then reduced in vacuo to leave a viscous oil. The oil was crystallized from hot methanol (600 mL) to obtain ditosylate (42) as a white solid (120.1 g, 97%). [□]D15+56.3° (c=11.2, CHCl3).
