Procedure
A solution of 5-bromo-2-methyl-pyridine (1.47 g, 8.54 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (5 mL) was treated with a cold solution of 30% hydrogen peroxide (4.6 mL) in acetic acid (13.8 mL) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 18 h and poured into ice water (5 mL). The resulting mixture was adjusted to pH=9 by addition of K2CO3. The mixture was stirred at rt for 15 min and diluted with CH2Cl2 (10 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted three times with CH2Cl2. The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 5-bromo-2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide as a white solid (1.6 g, 99%) which was used without further purification.
