1.2 g of N-acetyl-S-(2-aminophenyl)cysteine was dissolved in 20 ml of xylene and the resulting solution was heated under reflux for 2 hours. After cooling, the precipitated crystals were separated and washed with methanol to obtain 0.8 g of the desired compound, or 3-acetylamino-2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one. Its melting point was 283°-286° C.
