To a solution of 6.17 g 4-(4-oxo-4-phenyl-butyryl)-benzoic acid ethyl ester from Step 1 in 100 mL THF was added a solution of 3.86 g (69 mmol) potassium hydroxide in 110 mL water. The reaction was heated to reflux for 4.5 hr and allowed to cool. The reaction was transferred to an Ehrlenmeyer flask and cooled to 0° C. in an ice bath. Concentrated hydrochloric acid was added dropwise until a solid precipitated. The solid was collected by filtration and dried to afford 2.59 g (9.1 mmol) 4-(4-oxo-4-phenyl-butyryl)-benzoic acid.
