To a stirred solution of 4-amino-1-difluoromethoxy-2-methyl-benzene (5 g, 28.90 mmol) in HBr (20 mL) and water (20 mL) at 0° C. was added a solution of sodium nitrite (2.07 g, 30.00 mmol) in H2O (10 ml) dropwise over a period of 20 minutes. After the addition was complete, the reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at 0° C. Copper (1) bromide (4 g, 27.87 mmol) was then added and the mixture was heated at 60° C. for 30 minutes. The resulting solution was extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL) and the combined organic layers washed with H2O (1×20 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to provide 2.5 g (37%) of 4-bromo-1-(difluoromethoxy)-2-methylbenzene.
