Procedure
A solution of 2-amino-3-phenylbenzimidazole (4.18 g., 0.02 mole) and 1,2-dibromoethane (7.52 g., 0.04 mole) in toluene (40 ml.) was heated under reflux for 24 hours. After removal of the solvent the residual oil was crystallised from ethanol/ether. The product (0.950 g.) was recrystallised from ethanol/ether to give the title compound as its hydrobromide (0.875 g., m.p. 225°-228° C).
