Procedure

2.02 g of (3S)-3-hydroxymethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline are dissolved in 24 ml of methanol, and 1.5 ml of triethylamine and 1.8 ml of benzyloxycarbonyl chloride are added dropwise to the mixture. The mixture is stirred at 5°-10° C. for 3 hours, and the mixture is evaporated to remove the solvent. The residue is dissolved in ethyl acetate. The solution is washed with water, a 0.5M citric acid solution and water, dried and then evaporated to remove the solvent. 2.90 g of (3S)-2-benzyloxycarbonyl-3-hydroxymethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline are obtained as colorless oil. Yield: 86%
