Procedure
A stirring solution of 5.5 grams (0.02 mole) of 2-amino-3-cyano-5-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)pyrazine 1-oxide in 200 mL of dry tetrahydrofuran is cooled to 0° C. and 30 mL of phosphorus trichloride is added dropwise during a 5 minute period. Upon completion of addition, the reaction mixture is stirred at ambient temperature for 40 minutes. After this time the reaction mixture is concentrated under reduced pressure to about 50 mL. The 50 mL of concentrate is poured into 1000 mL of ice-water. The resultant solid is collected by filtration and dried, yielding 2-amino-3-cyano-5-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)pyrazine.
