Procedure
A mixture of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (7.6 g, 0.05 mol), cyclohexyl alcohol (6 g, 0.06 mol), p-toluenesulfonic acid (1 g, 0.006 mol) and benzene (300 mL) was refluxed with continuous water separation for 8 hours. The mixture was cooled and washed, first with aqueous 5% Na2CO3 solution, then twice with water, then was dried over anhydrous MgSO4. Evaporation of the solvent in vacuo gave cyclohexyl 4-hydroxyphenylacetate.
