To a solution of 4.2 g (13.0 mmol) of the product of Step E, 2.5 g (14.0 mmol) of 5,7-dimethyl-2-ethylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (prepared by the method described in patent application WO 91/11999), and 5.62 (20.0 mmol) of triphenylphosphine dissolved in 40 mL of THF, was added 3.396 g (20.0 mmol) of diethyl azodicarboxylate and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was then concentrated in vacuo and the residual oil was purified on a silica gel flash chromatography column eluted with 25-40% ethyl acetate/hexane to afford 5 g (80%) of the title compound.
