Procedure
A mixture of ethyl 4-chloro-3-oxo-butanoate (57.3 ml), cyclohexylaldehyde (53.65 ml), acetic acid (2.75 ml) and benzylamine (4.38 ml) is kept for 24 hrs at room temperature. It is then diluted with 150 ml of ethyl acetate and washed with 100 ml of water, then with 100 ml of saturated sodium carbonate solution and finally with 100 ml of a saturated solution of NaH2PO4. The solvent is evaporated to give 108.43 g of 4-chloro3-oxo-2-ethoxycarbonyl-1-cyclohexyl-but-1-ene.
