Procedure

Triethylamine (2.65 g, 26.2 mmol) was slowly added to a mixture of 2-mercapto-benzoic acid methyl ester (4.0 g, 23.8 mmol) and trityl chloride (6.63 g, 23.8 mmol) in CH2Cl2 at rt. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 3 h and washed with water (100 mL). The two phases were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2 (50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to provide 2-tritylsulfanyl-benzoic acid methyl ester (9.6 g), which was used directly to the next reaction without further purification. MS ESI(+) m/e: 411.15 (M+1).
