Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (99 mg, 2.4 mmol) is dissolved in water (12 mL) and this solution is added into 3-[3-(4-Methyl-benzo[b]thiophen-3-ylmethyl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl]-propionic acid methyl ester (600 mg, 1.6 mmol) in methanol (12 mL) at room temperature. The mixture is stirred for 2 hr and then 1.0 M HCl aqueous solution (3 mL) is added along with water (100 mL). Then the mixture is extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL) and the organic layers are combined, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give about 560 mg (97%) of 3-[3-(4-Methyl-benzo[b]thiophen-3-ylmethyl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl]-propionic acid which is used in the next step without further purification.
