Procedure
To a solution of 3-methyl-2-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-3H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester (962 mg) in tetrahydrofuran (10 ml) was added 1 N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (10 ml) at room temperature, and stirred at 80° C. for 1.5 hours. After completion of the reaction, 1 N hydrochloric acid aqueous solution (10 ml) was added thereto, and the solvent was evaporated. The obtained residue was washed with water, and dried in vacuo to give the titled compound (788 mg) as a gray solid.
