Procedure

A mixture of methyl 2,2-dimethyl-3-oxocyclobutanecarboxylate (1.0 equiv.), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (1.4 equiv.) and sodium bicarbonate (2.5 equiv.) was suspended in MeOH (0.6 M) and stirred at 11° C. for 12 h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and water was added. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered. The solvent was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the crude title product methyl 3-(hydroxyimino)-2,2-dimethyl-cyclobutanecarboxylate (92.7% yield) as a yellow oil, which was used in the next step without further purification. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ (ppm) 3.73 (s, 3H), 3.27 (dd, J=7.6 Hz, 18.4 Hz, 1H), 3.04 (q, J=9.2 Hz, 18 Hz 1H), 2.89 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 8.8 Hz, 1H), 1.57 (s, 1H), 1.40 (s, 2H), 1.28 (s, 1H), 1.19 (s, 2H).
