A solution of 4-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine-2-carbaldehyde (CAS number 132470-83-8; 1.00 g, 5.71 mmol) and 4-(cyclopent-1-en-1-yl)morpholine (CAS number 936-52-7; 0.90 ml, 5.60 mmol) in toluene (15 ml) was heated at 90° C. for 18 hours. The reaction was then cooled to room temperature and concentrated HCl (2 ml) and water (2 ml) was added drop wise. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes and then neutralised with a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate and then basified with 2 M NaOH (aq). The organics were extracted with ethyl acetate (2×40 ml) and the combined organics were washed with brine (10 ml), dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered through a hydrophobic frit and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (silica, 0-20% ethyl acetate/petrol) to afford the title compound.
