Procedure
3-(Cyanomethyl)-2-phenylpyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine (0.35 g, 1.5 mmol) and phenacyl bromide (0.36 g) in acetonitrile (5 ml) was refluxed for 18 h. The resulting solid product was isolated by filtration and washed with diethyl ether to give pure 3-(cyanomethyl)-7-phenacyl-2-phenylpyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine hydrobromide (0.46 g, 70%).
