Procedure
A solution 15.0 g of 4-bromomethyl-2-oxo-[5H]-furan (Martin R. et al., Helv.Chim. Acta, 1976, 59, 2724) in 100 ml of trimethylphosphite was refluxed for 2 hrs, while a stream of nitrogen was bubbled vigorously into the solution. The mixture was then evaporated to dryness and the residue was purified by chromatography (SiO2 ; ethyl acetate/diethylether 50/50) to give 16.0 g of dimethyl (2-oxo-[5H]-4-furyl)methyl-phosphonate.
