Procedure
The ethyl 2,3-dihydro-5-[[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]methyl]-2-oxo-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylate obtained in Example 6 is dissolved in a solution of 3 equivalents of lithium hydroxide in water. The solution is allowed to stand at room temperature for 48 hours before it is neutralized carefully with 2 equivalents of hydrochloric acid. The precipitate which forms is separated by filtration and recrystallized from a mixture of ethanol and ethyl acetate to give 2,3-dihydro-5-[[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]methyl]-2-oxo-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid.
