Procedure
A one liter three necked flask fitted with a mechanical stirrer, condenser and thermometer is charged with 21.7 g of 4-fluoro-4'-nitrobiphenyl, 31.0 g of diethanolamine, 13.8 g of potassium carbonate, 1.0 g of Aliquot 336, and 500 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide. The reaction mixture is heated at 95° C. for a period of three days, cooled, and poured into 4 liters of ice water. The crude solid product is filtered, washed with water, and dried.
