A mixture containing 50 g of 3-trifluoromethylbenzyl chloride and 32.4 g of sodium sulfite in 200 ml of water was refluxed for five hours and then concentrated by evaporation. The concentrate was then filtered to collect the precipitate (product). The precipitate was then washed with ethyl ethyl and then dried in a vacuum oven affording 61 g of sodium 3-trifluoromethylbenzylsulfonate.
