Procedure
4-chloro-2-methyl phenol (10g, 0.07 mol) and cyanogen bromide (7.4g, 0.07 mol) were stirred in acetone at 0° C. and triethylamine (9.7 ml, 0.07 mol) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for a further 2 hours, then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated using a rotary evaporator to leave the desired product as a fawn solid. This was used without further purification. The melting point of the product, after recrystallisation from ethyl acetate/hexane, was found to be 60° C.
