A mixture of 14 g (0.06 mol) of crude 1-benzyl-4-chloromethyl-pyrrolidin-2-one, prepared as in Example 1(a), 10 g of diethylamine and 50 ml of dimethylformamide was stirred or shaken for 2 hours at 150° C. in an autoclave. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness in vacuo, the residue was taken up in methylene chloride, and the solution was washed first with water and finally the title compound was extracted twice with 25 ml of 2 N HCl. The aqueous phase was separated, made alkaline with sodium hydroxide and the organic base was extracted with methylene chloride. The methylene chloride phase was evaporated, and the residue was distilled in vacuo. Yield: 10 g (61% of theory), bp0.05 =155°-158° C.
