Procedure
This compound was prepared according to the method of Sandris and Ourisson, Bull Soc. Chim. Fr. 25: 345 (1985), in which 25 gms (180 mmoles) of phorone and 180 mls of ammonium hydroxide are stirred at 35° C. for 12 hrs. The solution is then cooled in an ice bath and concentrated HCl is added until the pH of the solution is 1. This solution is then saturated with NaCl and extracted with ether. The pH of the remaining liquid is raised to 10 with ammonium hydroxide followed by ether extraction. The ether solution is then dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated to dryness, in vacuo, giving 20 gms (78%) of the desired product, B.P. 80°-85° C. at 15 mm Hg.
