Procedure

Under the conditions of Example 14(C), a solution of 5.4 g of 7-benzyloxyindole-2-carboxylic acid phenyl ester in a mixture of 50 ml of methanol and 30 ml of tetrahydrofuran is hydrogenated and worked up, yielding 3.5 g of 7-hydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid phenyl ester, mp 156°-157° C.
