Procedure
Hydrogen chloride gas was passed into a suspension of 80.4 g (0.4 mole) of the sodium salt of 2-hydroxy-4-methyl-5,6-dichloropyrimidine in 600 ml of methanol until the mixture reacted strongly acid. The mixture was then stirred for a further hour and thereafter the solvent was distilled off in vacuo. The residue was triturated with 50 ml of water and filtered off. 41.3 g (59% of theory) of 2-hydroxy-4-methyl-5-chloro-6-methoxy-pyrimidine were obtained in the form of a beige powder of melting point 235° C.
