Procedure

6-(4-Bromo-2-chloro-phenylamino)-7-fluoro-3H-benzoimidazole-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester 8b (58 mg, 0.146 mmol) is suspended in EtOH (2 mL) and 1 mL 2 N NaOH is added. After 16 hours, the reaction mixture is diluted with ethyl acetate, water, and 10% HCl solution. The layers are separated and the organic layer is washed with brine. The organic layer is dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. Trituration with MeOH gives 22 mg (39%) pure desired product.
