Procedure

1.55 g of 4-amino-4-methoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline obtained in Step 1 was dissolved in 50 ml of dimethylformamide, then added with 2.24 g of methyl iodide and 2.14 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ether. The ether phase was washed with water and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed to obtain 1.51 g of the title compound as pale yellow crystals.
