100 mg of 1,6-anhydro-3,4-dideoxy-β-D-glycero-hex-3-enopyranos-2-ulose was dissolved in 3 ml of propionic anhydride, and the solution was cooled to -20° C. Then, 0.06 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid was added thereto, and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. Then, the reaction mixture was added to 100 ml of an ice-cooled saturated sodium hydrogencarbonate aqueous solution. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and then extracted with 100 ml of ethyl acetate. The extract was washed three times with 100 ml of a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The obtained syrup crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate: hexane=1:2) to obtain 100 mg of the desired product (Intermediate No. 19) as a colorless transparent liquid.
