A mixture of compound 4 (40 g, 205 mmol, 1 equiv), (biphenyl-2-yl)boronic acid (81.2 g, 410 mmol, 2 equiv), powdered potassium carbonate (85 g, 615 mmol, 3 equiv), and bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II)dichloride (7.2 g, 10.3 mmol, 0.05 equiv), 1,4-dioxane (300 mL) and water (150 mL) was heated overnight at 80° C. The reaction was poured into 500 mL of water and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×400 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with saturated brine (300 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified over silica gel (400 g) eluting with heptanes to give compound (5) (50 g, 91% yield) as a light-yellow oil that slowly turned to an off-white solid on standing.
