A flask was charged with sodium hydride 60% (0.803 mg, 20.12 mmol) in DMF and stirred at RT for 10 min. To this was added 2,8-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole (1.28 g, 6.4 mmol) and again stirred at RT for 1 h. 2-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-2-methyloxirane (1.5 g, 9.14 mmol) was added and the mixture stirred at RT overnight. Ice water was added and the mixture extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined organic layers were washed with water (4×) and concentrated. The product was purified on silica gel (#100-200 mesh) using 0-5% MeOH:DCM as eluent. 1HNMR (DMSO, Oxalate salt) d (ppm): 7.40 (d, 2H), 7.35 (d, 1H), 7.15 (s, 1H), 6.86 (m, 3H), 4.30 (m, 2H), 4.18 (d, 1H), 4.0 (d, 1H), 3.80 (s, 3H), 3.40 (m, 3H), 2.90 (m, 1H), 2.82 (s, 3H), 2.38 (s, 3H), 1.40 (s, 3H).
