Procedure

Sodium hydride (60% suspension in mineral oil, 90 mg) was added to a solution of 1H-pyrrole-2,5-dicarboxylic acid 2-ethyl ester 5-methyl ester (100 mg) in N,N-dimethylformamide (2 mL) and the resulting mixture was stirred for 5 minutes. 2,4,6-Trimethyl-benzenesulfonylhydroxylamine (prepared from 0.5 g of mesitilene oxamate as described in JOC 1973, 1239) was then added and the mixture was stirred for 5 minutes. The reaction mixture was then quenched by addition of water and the resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure. The crude residue was purified by flash chromatography (hexane/EtOAc, 90/10) to afford 100 mg of 1-amino-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dicarboxylic acid 2-ethyl ester 5-methyl ester.
