To a solution of 4-fluoro-3-nitrophenol (8.1 g, 38 mmol) and 2-(chloromethyl)quinoline (6.0 g, 38 mmol) in DMF (100 mL) were added K2CO3 (21 g, 153 mmol) followed by KI (317 mg, 1.9 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 5 h. The mixture was cooled to RT, water (100 mL) was added, and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×150 mL). The organics were combined, washed with brine (50 mL), dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to dryness. The residue was purified by FCC to afford the title compound. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.27 (d, J=9, 1H), 8.15 (d, J=9, 1H), 7.87 (d, J=9, 1H), 7.80-7.72 (m, 2H), 7.65-7.56 (m, 2H), 7.32-7.26 (m, 1H), 7.23-7.16 (m, 1H), 5.44 (s, 2H).
