2.26 g of the p-nitrophenyl ester of benzyloxycarbonyl-L-asparagine and 1.89 ml (13.6 mmol) of triethylamine were added, whilst ice-cooling, to a solution of 900 mg (3.9 mmol) of (2S,3S)-3-amino-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid hydrochloride in 15 ml of dimethylformamide, and the mixture was stirred at 4° C. for 2 days. At the end of this time, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was mixed with 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid to cause crystallization. The crystals were collected by filtration and washed first with water and then with ethyl acetate, to give 1.52 g of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 225°-227° C.
