Procedure
A mixture of E1 hydrochloride salt (0.2 g, 0.5 mmol), sodium triacetoxyborohydride (400 MG), aqueous formaldehyde (0.5 mL, 37%), and 1,2-dichloroethane (10 mL containing 0.5 mL triethylamine) was stirred for 18 h then diluted with dichloromethane (50 mL) and washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate (100 mL), dried (MgSO4), and evaporated to give the title compound E2 isolated as the hydrochloride salt from ether (0.3 g). MH+ 423. 1H NMR δ (CDCl3) 2.39 (3H, s), 2.60 (4H, m), 2.97 (4H, m), 3.70 (3H, s), 6.65 (1H, s), 6.99 (2H, d), 7.20 (2H, m), 7.38 (3H, m), 7.63 (2H, m), 7.81 (1H, s).
