Procedure
A mixture of 4-formyl-2-methoxy-3-nitrophenyl acetate 4.54 g (19.0 mmol) and potassium carbonate 5.24 g (37.9 mmol) in methanol 40 mL was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into water, acidified by 1N HCl solution and extracted into AcOEt. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtrated and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was washed with n-hexane to give the title compound 3.60 g as white solid. Yield 96.3%.
