A solution of 2,3-dichlorobenzaldehyde (1.33 g, 7.6 mmoles), 3-oxetanyl 3-oxobutanoate (1.2 g, 7.6 mmoles), piperidine (6 drops) and hexanoic acid (8 drops) in dry benzene (80 ml) was heated at reflux using a Dean and Stark apparatus. The solution was allowed to cool to room temperature and the solvent removed in vacuo to leave the sub-title compound as an oil 2.9 g.
